Darwin

Arrived here in Darwin on Thursday. Headed straight to Maccas in Palmerston for lunch! Then off to Shady Glen Caravan Park on Stuart Highway. Cabin is pretty good and comfy with a sofa. Cranked up the air cond straight away as its pretty humid and hot here. Caravan Park itself is pretty grotty - signs up everywhere telling you not to leave anything lying around and make sure you lock up all the time!! Not very reassuring! We also quickly found out how close it is to the airport as the earth shook on a regular basis!!! Nevermind, we soon made the cabin as messy as all the others we have stayed in and then we felt right at home!!! Went to the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets on thursday night. Very big, very popular, very, very crowded. Sensational sunset. Lots of stalls, especially food stalls.
Friday we did some food shopping at Casuarina then off to the city for a look around. Nice looking waterfront areas -had a look at the Stokes Hill wharf, the Esplanade,Govt House, Parliament House and the old WWII Tunnels. Then on to Cullen Bay Marina - very upmarket here. This is where the ferry leaves to go to the Tiwi Islands. The Marina itself has an interesting loch system to counter the huge tides here in Darwin. Later we went back to Palmerston for another night market.
Today - Saturday - we went to another market at Parap Village. This one was also very big, very popular and very crowded. It was also very humid and hot. These markets had a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables - interesting looking tropical vegetables. A lot of the stalls have tropical smoothies that they whip up fresh for you. These are very popular with big queues - we got some of these and they were delicious - really refreshing and icy cold. Other popular stalls were the laksa stalls - people queue for ages to get their saturday morning laksa!!! We bought some fresh jack fruit, pawpaw and mango.

Katherine

This morning we went on the 2 Gorges cruise at Nitmunik - Katherine Gorge. Its very popular here and lots of people going on various cruises. There's also a lot of people going on walks - some of them overnight!!! Some of the walks are fairly difficult - with a rating of 4 and 5 which is the highest. I had no inclination to go on any such walks, especially in the hot weather, my climb at Mt Augustus will do me for awhile.
The cruise down the 1st gorge was very leisurely, especially after our order river 'cruise' which was more like white water rafting! I was a bit disappointed with the lack of obvious birdlife although I did see a rainbow bee eater. When we reached then end of the 1st gorge, we all got off and walked about 600m to the next gorge - with the next boat. We walked past some petroglyphs - aboriginal drawings - in the cliff face above us. They were quite high and we are not sure how they were able to draw them there. The 2nd gorge was even more stunning than the 1st - breathtakingly beautiful! The gorges are only open for cruises in the dry season as the water current is just too strong during the wet.

In the afternoon we headed into town for a dip in the thermal pools. What a unique experience this turned out to be. This is a series of 4 or so pools of freshwater that bubbles from the ground at a constant temperature of approx 32c. Being in the pools is like being in a spa except of course that the pools are part of the running water from underground. The funny thing was when we arrived all we could see in the 1st pool was grey heads!! Lots of grey nomads - it looked like a scene from that movie 'Cocoon' where all the old people go into the swimming pool because it makes them feel younger!!! So, of course, we had to join them!! It was very refreshing. Further down there was lots of kids and teenagers in the 3rd pool doing bombies and slides into the 4th pool.
Heading off to Darwin tomorrow - staying for 3 nights.

Kununurra

We have had a great few days here. Weather has got progessively warmer - today was 34C - beautiful. Apartment is very comfy and its nice to have a sofa to sit on.
On Saturday went on a scenic flight to the Bungle Bungles, we got a good look at the Ord Diversion Dam, irrigated cropfields, the Ord River and the huge Lake Argyle (largest inland sea in the world) on the way. We had a bit of a bonus as our flight was dropping 2 passengers off at the Bungles and picking up another 2 there and dropping them off at Emma Gorge to go to El Questro so we got 2 extra takeoffs and landings - both on gravel airstrips but very smooth. On the way back we had a good look at the Argyle Diamond Mine, Carr Boyd Ranges, Durack Ranges and the Gibb River Road.
On Sunday we went on a cruise down the Ord River. We were picked up from our apartment by a bus and driven to Lake Argyle, some 70K away. There we got to look at the re-located Durack Homestead ( it was originally situated where Lake Argyle flooded). Then on to the boat for the 55K trip down the Ord River back to Kununurra. This was a fantastic cruise. The boat went very fast - it was exhilarating. But the skipper stopped in lots of spots to highlight different points of interest - we saw rock wallabies, fruit bats, sea eagles, an azure kingfisher and quite a lot of freshwater crocodiles. The scenery along the way was beautiful - mountains and cliffs on both sides with lots of lush vegetation. As we neared Kununurra we stopped again just before sunset and the skipper pointed out a huge bat colony hanging from trees over the river - the estimated population of these bats is between 800,000 and 2 million!!!!
We have been for some walks across the road at Lily Creek Lagoon and doing a bit of bird watching. We have seen crimson finches and rainbow bee eaters and other different birds that we don't know the names of.
Off to Katherine in NT tomorrow - one and a half hour time difference!

Kununurra

Our last night in Broome was spent at the Sun outdoor cinema in town which apparently is the oldest picture theatre in Australia. We sat in deck chairs with the stars above and watched 'Angels and Demons' with Tom Hanks.

From Broome we headed towards Kununurra. But as it is over 1000kms we had to have an overnight stop in Halls Creek. Motel room there was OK,although the walls were paper thin, but was happy not to hang around in that place. The drive from Halls Creek to Kununurra is very picturesque through the King Leopold and Durack Ranges with lots of winding roads and creek and river crossings.
Unfortunately after the Wyndham turn off we came across an accident involving an old Toyota Troop Carrier that had rolled and landed on its roof. The occupants, 2 young german tourists, managed to crawl free, we don't know how as the roof on the drivers side was squashed flat! An ambulance came and took them to hospital and some of us helped clear the debris off the road. It was very side clearing all their belongings up and it was a sobering experience.
The north of WA is filled with lots of grey nomads and young overseas backpackers travelling around. People up here are friendly, both locals and tourists and its a pleasant change from nasty Perth.
Staying here in Kununurra for 4 nights in a nice apartment overlooking Lily Creek Lagoon. Its even got a sofa - all the more comfortable to watch the footy!!!

Broome

Yesterday we went to Malcolm Douglas' Wilderness Park. We went on the guided tour about 11am after first having a hold of a juvenile crocodile - with its jaws taped up. The guide really made the difference going around the park. It was very informative and he had lots of stories to tell as to how different crocodiles ended up there - usually from attacking or menacing people! Lots of other australian animals there including dingoes, wallabies, kangaroos, birds, lizards and snakes.
Afterwards went to Maccas for lunch. I love eating Maccas and I'm going to eat it all around Australia!!!
Did somemore window shopping in the afternoon and then at sunset we headed out for Cable Beach. The sunset there was absolutely glorious and there was quite a crowd watching it. We also saw the camels that do the sunset rides - they looked quite splendid (photo attached) - as I am not a fan of camels.
Today we went to Cable Beach for a swim. It is just the BEST beach. Nice and flat, firm sand, no nasty rips or undercurrents, the water is a lovely turquoise colour and the water temperature is a pleasant 22C. The air temperature was 30C and we rented a beach umbrella and chairs.
It was Blissorama!!!!
Tonight we are going to the Sun outdoor cinema to watch 'Angels and Demons'.
Tomorrow we must leave - headed for Kununurra, but as it is over 1000kms we will be having an overnight stop in Halls Creek.

Broome

Monday, June 15, 2009

Arrived in Broome this afternoon. Left Karratha yesterday morning and headed for Port Hedland. Had lunch there at a park next to the port where we were lucky enough to see 2 iron ore carriers leaving port. Everybody we know who has been to Port Hedland told us to drive straight thru as there was nothing good about it. Well, we took their advice. It's a pretty big town and everything is rusty and red from the iron ore, but apart from that, it looked alright. We then carried on to the Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park for an overnight stop, as it is too long a drive to get to Broome in one day. Eighty Mile Beach was lovely. The tide was out when we got there and there are lots of shells on the beach which apparently goes for over 200kms not just 80 miles long!! The sand was so hard the 4WD's did'nt need to let air out of their tyres to drive on it.
Cabin there was OK but no ensuite, although the ablution block was OK (unlike that grotty place at Mt Augustus). However, I still don't like the middle of the night trip to the toilet with a torch!!!
Lovely caravan park though, very laid back.
Set off for Broome about 9am and it was a pretty boring trip - not much in the way of landscape. There were lots of eagles everywhere and other birds of prey e.g. falcons, kites, hawks etc.
Went straight to Cable Beach on arrival about 12.30 and what a sight for sore eyes ( yes, my eyes really were sore from the driving!!!)It is a lovely beach in a lovely, tropical setting - a picture postcard. Then we headed to our caravan park - Palm Grove in Cable Beach. We have a lovely studio cabin for 3 nights, again in a lovely tropical setting. The weather is about 26C - it could be warmer for me. Everybody up here is complaining about the cold nights - apparently it does'nt normally get so cold.
We unloaded the truck and got some washing going then headed off to town for lunch.
Settled at Matso's Brewery for lunch and some cool ales - perfect!!!!
Later went for a walk around town.

At Karratha

Karijini was FANTASTIC - you don't really get how dramatic the gorges are - they are awesome!
When we woke up at Tom Price that morning it was raining - unbelievable! We headed out to Karijini - about 50k away. We were so glad we weren't camping as the campers looked pretty miserable and dishevelled in the rain.
The first gorge we went to we had to be really careful going down the steps as the rocks were really slippy - even with our hiking boots on. Fern Pool was just beautiful - very serene and peaceful - the photo would be a good one to have as a screensaver when you are at crappy work!
We also looked at Circular Pool and walked through Weano Gorge.
While we were at Tom Price we checked into the Visitor Centre where we had to apply for a permit to travel on the Hamersley Iron Private Road from Tom Price to Karratha. This is a track that runs along the rail transporting the iron ore. We also had to watch a 20 minute DVD on the conditions for using the road.
Next day we set out on the track. This turned out to be a real challenge. Started off OK - saw lots of iron ore trains along the way. But the track deteriorated as we went along. There was a lot of water on the road and I had to drive slowly and carefully around the water, watching out for ruts in the road (we did'nt want another 'clanger' like the road from Mt Augustus where we knackered the tyre and bent the wheel!!!). Sometimes I had to drive through the water and also there was a fair bit of mud which reduced traction. We wanted to go to Millstream but 15k up the turn off track the road had been closed so we had to turn back and carry on to Karratha. Fortunately the road turned to lovely bitumen about 100k before Karratha so we thought it would be all smooth sailing. But when we got to the Harding River the whole road had been washed away and a makeshift road had been built (see photo). We were very glad to reach Karratha but the poor truck was a mess - there was mud caked everywhere! We gave it a good wash down at the Caravan Park in Karratha and now she looks lovely again! Spent last night and tonight in Karratha, which is quite big and busy, lots of industry. On Sunday we head thru Port Hedland on the way to Broome. We will be spending Sunday night at Eighty Mile Beach. Watching West Coast later this avo, desperate for a win!!!!

Turquoise Bay Ningaloo Reef

Exmouth

Went snorkelling at Turquoise Bay on the Ningaloo Reef. Weather turned out great -warm and sunny with a slight breeze - about 25C. It was just FANTASTIC! The fish were just like you see on TV on a coral reef. They were all shapes, sizes and colours - especially blues and yellows - lovely little angel fish and lots of little blue ones too. The coral was pretty good too - lots of different sorts . Quite a lot of people there snorkelling too, although some had wet suits on, which as we found out, made sense, as we got quite cold and wrinkly in the water after a while!
Had a bit of a sunbath on the beach too, it was sooooooo lovely. So much better than being at work!!!!! We had some prawn rolls for lunch - the prawns were from Exmouth of course. Afterwards we went and picked up our new tyre which had to be freighted in from Perth - $389!!!

Climbing Mt Augustus

Monday, June 8, 2009

Exmouth

Monday 8th June

From Carnarvon we travelled thru Gascoyne Junction to Mt Augustus. Roads there varied in quality, but were all dirt with lots of floodways and dips. Signs of obvious flooding everywhere. When we checked in at the Shire office at Gascoyne Junction they said the roads had only just re-opened after floods. Lots of roadkill - mainly kangaroos. There were also lots and lots of huge eagles feasting on the roadkills - they are the biggest blackest mothers we've ever seen! Also lots of other animals wandering around - goats, emus, cattle, sheep and roos.\
Camping at Mt Augustus was ok but not my cup of tea - too much like hard work! But the tent was good, so were the mattresses and sleeping bags - you could'nt tell you were sleeping onthe ground. The ablution block was very old, dirty and rundown - would not recommend it but the camping area was ok and of course a wonderful view of Mt Augustus. We climbed the mountain on Saturday - it was about a 5 - 6 hours and the view from the top was spectacular but it was bloody hard work for an old goat like me!
No radio reception or mobile reception in Mt Augustus - very isolated.
Packed up on Sunday morning ( what a lot of trouble it is packing up camping gear!) and headed off for the long trip to Exmouth.
Unfortunately we took a wrong turn and ended up back at Gascoyne Junction - oops! This meant another 300 kms to our trip. But wait, it got worse! On one of the little dirt tracks we were on we blew a tyre and cracked a wheel on one of the dips in the road.I got stressed about this 'cause we were in the middle of nowhere, the nearest civilization was a station 50 kms away! However, Peter very expertly changed the tyre and we were on our way again, albeit much more slowly until we got to the bitumen which we were very happy to see. Reached Exmouth about 5.30pm Sunday night.
Nice chalet here at ExmouthCape caravan park with a comfy bed and quite roomy.
Temperature is about 25C but windy, although it was cold overnight. We did some housekeeping/maintenance today - organising another tyre, food shopping, getting more money and the neverending washing! Tomorrow we are going snorkelling at Turquoise Bay near Exmouth. Unfortunately it has come up cloudy which is not ideal for snorkelling but never mind, we have to leave on Wednesday morning - off to Tom Price for a couple of days to check out Karijini. Cheers!!!

2/6/09 Denham

Set off from Geraldton about 9.15am. Ran into an old workmate Kaye at the lovely Sunset Beach Caravan Park - which, by the way, has no beach! Stopped at Billabong roadhouse to stretch our legs etc and change drivers. Then off to Hamelin Pool to have a look at the stromolites, which were alright if u like that sort of thing - load of nothing if u ask me, but then nobody did ask me did they? I did get my daily walk though and afterwards we stopped and had lunch. Nice and warm up here - time for shorts! Yeeha!! Then off to Denham. Staying at Shark Bay Caravan Park - bit of a shithole - the chalet is.....I have many names for it - donga, sea container - I'm sure u get the drift - it is a another pokey hole only not as good as the pokey hole at geraldton!! I guess u get what u pay for and this is what u get for $90 per night. Went down to Monkey Mia - lovely beach and calm waters - very idyllic - saw lots of dolphins just off the beach swimming around. We will be down there again tomorrow morning at 7.30am for the first feed - thats for the dolphins, not us!!! We have decided not to cook tonite( had a nice seafood linguine last night at geraldton with fresh farmed mulloway - beautiful) so we can have everything packed in the truck ready to go to Monkey Mia early. By the way, the truck is cruising beautifully, no troubles at all. For those followers who think I've waffled too much, too bad........the rum is going down very easily................Cheers!

1/6/09

Set off from downtown Bibra Lake about 10am. Went down Roe Hwy then up Great Northern Hwy. Chose not to go on Brand Hwy as it is usually very busy. Took Leonie TP's advice and went via Moora, Carnamah and Mingenew. Very pleasant and scenic drive, no traffic,no nasty caravans or roadtrains! Arrived in Geraldton about 4.30pm. Caravan Park chalet is a little dogbox! Thank goodness it is only for 1 night. Peter has just had a shower which he says was cold! My turn next! Felt a bit homesick when I saw the pokey chalet but recovered quickly after a few rum and cokes!
Off to Denham tomorrow. Cheers!!
