Arrived in Broome this afternoon. Left Karratha yesterday morning and headed for Port Hedland. Had lunch there at a park next to the port where we were lucky enough to see 2 iron ore carriers leaving port. Everybody we know who has been to Port Hedland told us to drive straight thru as there was nothing good about it. Well, we took their advice. It's a pretty big town and everything is rusty and red from the iron ore, but apart from that, it looked alright. We then carried on to the Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park for an overnight stop, as it is too long a drive to get to Broome in one day. Eighty Mile Beach was lovely. The tide was out when we got there and there are lots of shells on the beach which apparently goes for over 200kms not just 80 miles long!! The sand was so hard the 4WD's did'nt need to let air out of their tyres to drive on it.
Cabin there was OK but no ensuite, although the ablution block was OK (unlike that grotty place at Mt Augustus). However, I still don't like the middle of the night trip to the toilet with a torch!!!
Lovely caravan park though, very laid back.
Set off for Broome about 9am and it was a pretty boring trip - not much in the way of landscape. There were lots of eagles everywhere and other birds of prey e.g. falcons, kites, hawks etc.
Went straight to Cable Beach on arrival about 12.30 and what a sight for sore eyes ( yes, my eyes really were sore from the driving!!!)It is a lovely beach in a lovely, tropical setting - a picture postcard. Then we headed to our caravan park - Palm Grove in Cable Beach. We have a lovely studio cabin for 3 nights, again in a lovely tropical setting. The weather is about 26C - it could be warmer for me. Everybody up here is complaining about the cold nights - apparently it does'nt normally get so cold.
We unloaded the truck and got some washing going then headed off to town for lunch.
Settled at Matso's Brewery for lunch and some cool ales - perfect!!!!
Later went for a walk around town.
